Some fishing trips start with a guide and a plan for the day. Others start with a map, your own tackle and a river you have been looking forward to exploring.
If you prefer to organise your own fishing, we have added a new DIY Fishing in Iceland guide to our website. It brings together the practical steps for planning an independent trip, with links to fluguveidi.is for fishing area information and permits.
Planning for 2027? Our 2027 fishing availability will go online on 1 December 2026. You don’t have to wait until then: contact us now to reserve fishing permits for your preferred waters and dates.
Your trip, your choice of water
A DIY trip lets you arrange your own transport, equipment and accommodation around the fishing you want to do. You might be planning a few days on familiar water, adding a day’s fishing to a longer journey around Iceland, or visiting the north with friends and a full fly box.
Start by choosing a river or lake that suits your dates, experience and preferred fishing method. Fluguveidi.is has information about waters including Mýrarkvísl, Reykjadalsá, Laxá in Aðaldal, Litlaá and Skjálftavatn. The online permit shop will show the permits offered for your selected fishing area and dates once availability is released.
A little preparation makes the day easier
Before booking, check which beat or fishing area the permit covers, the fishing hours, the number of rods and any tackle or catch-and-release rules. Read the inclusions carefully: guiding, equipment, transport and a lodge stay are separate unless your chosen booking specifically includes them.
Our new guide includes a planning checklist, answers to common questions and a link to the official instructions for bringing used fishing equipment into Iceland. Once permits are released, the permit shop will show the available dates, prices and booking details.

Independent fishing, with local help when you need it
If you are not sure which water to choose, send us your travel dates, group size, fishing experience and the species you would like to target. We can help you work out which options to explore.
And if you would like an introduction to unfamiliar water, ask us about guiding or take a look at our guided fishing day tours. Any guiding arrangements and availability will be confirmed separately.
