What is DIY fishing in Iceland?
DIY fishing means planning and fishing independently, rather than joining a guided tour. You choose your fishing area and dates, obtain the appropriate permit and make your own arrangements for transport and equipment. Accommodation and guiding are separate unless the selected booking specifically includes them.
A fishing permit is often described as a fishing licence. Always check exactly which river, lake or beat, dates, fishing hours and number of rods your booking covers.
How to plan and book your fishing
- Choose your area. Browse the rivers and lakes on fluguveidi.is. Consider your route, experience, preferred fishing method and the species you would like to target.
- Read the fishery information. Check access, boundaries, tackle rules, fishing hours, catch-and-release requirements and any accommodation arrangements before choosing a permit.
- Check your dates in the shop. Open the online permit shop, select a fishing area and review the available permits. The shop has an English language option.
- Review your booking. Confirm the dates, rods, total price, inclusions and cancellation terms before paying. Availability and prices are those shown for your chosen booking.
- Prepare before travelling. Keep your booking confirmation, check the meeting or access instructions and ask us about anything that is unclear before heading to the water.
Find a river or lake for your trip
The shop lists fishing areas including Mýrarkvísl, Reykjadalsá, Laxá in Aðaldal, Litlaá and Skjálftavatn, as well as lakes such as Langavatn and Vestmannsvatn. Each listing has its own permits and conditions. A listing does not mean permits are available for every date.
If you are new to the area, contact our team with your travel dates, number of anglers, experience and preferred species. We can help you identify which options to look at.
Before you go: your DIY checklist
- Permit and instructions: check your dates, fishing area, rod allocation, hours, access route and beat rotation where applicable.
- Equipment: bring tackle suitable for the fishery and confirm any restrictions on flies, hooks, bait or fishing methods. Do not assume rental equipment is included with a permit.
- Clothing and supplies: pack waterproof layers, warm clothing, suitable footwear, food and drinking water.
- Transport and accommodation: plan driving times and book any overnight stay you need. Do not assume a lodge stay is included.
- Conditions: check current weather and road information, follow local instructions and adjust your plans to the conditions.
- Care for the fishery: respect boundaries, close gates, leave no litter and follow the fishery’s fish-handling and catch-reporting instructions.
Bringing fishing equipment from abroad?
Used fishing equipment that has been used abroad must be disinfected before use in Icelandic freshwater. Check the current official MAST instructions for fishing equipment and disinfection before travelling, including the documentation and arrival arrangements that apply to your gear.
Questions about DIY fishing
Does a permit include a guide, transport or equipment?
Only if your selected booking explicitly says so. For a DIY trip, plan to arrange these yourself and read the inclusions carefully.
Where can I see current prices and availability?
Use the online permit shop linked from fluguveidi.is. Select the fishery and your dates to see the options offered for that booking.
Can I fish a different beat or change my fishing hours?
Follow the area and hours on your permit and the fishery’s instructions. Contact the team before making changes or fishing outside your allocated area.
Would a guided day be a better starting point?
If you would like local instruction or help getting to know unfamiliar water, explore our guided fishing day tours or ask us about guiding for your trip. Availability and arrangements must be confirmed separately.
