Lake Hraunsvatn

Hraunsvatn is a relatively large lake that holds a healthy stock of enormous Ice age arctic char. The lake is situated in the valley Öxnadalur in about 400 m above sea level.

It’s safe to say that there are not many places on earth where you can find arctic char like the ones found in the lake Hraunsvatn. The Lake is said to have formed when the ice slid down the valley breaking peaces out of the mountain until a slide clogged up the valley forming this 60 metre deep lake. Many speculations have been about how the arctic char came to inhabit the lake as the river that runs from the lake suddenly disappears into the ground with no clear exit in the valley down below.

The char grow to this enormous size by feeding on the smaller char in the lake and this also gives them the silvery color resembling a sea run arctic char. Catching big arctic char is by no means a sure thing but spending a day in the spectacular surroundings of Hraunsvatn always leaves you with feeling of a great respect for nature and its wonders. There are no roads leading to Hraunsvatn and it takes around 30-45 minutes to walk to the lake. The landscape is magnificent in this peaceful place away from the interruption of modern life. We offer a day trip to this mystical lake in the mountains.
