Sea run Trout & Char fishing
Contact usLitlaá & Earthquake Lake
Litlaá is a unique and highly productive trout river fed directly by Lake Skjálftavatn, often called the “earthquake lake.” The river allows five rods, while two rods fish the lake, creating a low-pressure system with plenty of space for each angler. One of the defining features of Litlaá is a geothermal branch that flows into the river. This warm inflow prevents the river from freezing in winter and provides year-round food for trout and char. As a result, the system holds exceptionally strong brown trout, large sea-run brown trout, and healthy Arctic char, all of which benefit from the stable temperatures and rich conditions.
Lake Skjálftavatn is very shallow, which helps produce big, well-conditioned brown trout throughout the season. During warm periods, the lake water heats up and the Arctic char gather around the cold spring inflows, seeking cooler temperatures. When this happens, hundreds of char can stack in concentrated areas, creating remarkable fishing opportunities for anglers who enjoy sight-fishing and active stillwater tactics. Char in the lake have been caught up to 90 cm, which is exceptionally large for the species and makes Skjálftavatn one of the most exciting char waters in Iceland.
Together, Litlaá and Skjálftavatn form a diverse and dynamic fishery offering everything from technical river sight-fishing to thrilling stillwater action when trout and char move into concentrated feeding zones. The combination of steady water temperatures, varied habitats, and consistently strong fish makes this system one of the most unique and rewarding in the country.
