Sea run Trout & Char fishing
Contact usLónsá on Langanes
River Lónsá is situated in North East Iceland on the Langanes Peninsula about a 3,5 hour drive from Akureyri. The river has a healthy stock of stationary brown trout throughout the season as well as sea run brown trout and arctic char coming in and out of the estuary with the tides. Around the middle of May the runs of arctic char start coming in and are usually running strong throughout August & September, offering some of the best fly fishing in Iceland.
Lónsá is the little pearl of the Langanes Peninsula about a five minute drive from the fishing village Þórshöfn. The river is producing about 500 trout and char a year with only 4 four rods allowed to fish per day from April 1st throughout September with at least a few days between each group to ensure everyone gets the best chance to experiecne the magic Lónsá offers.
Fishing the Lónsá in springtime can be amazing as the arctic char and sea run brown trout are coming in and out of the estuary in great numbers. They feed on tiny scuds/gammarus and you can sight fish them from a fairly short distance. It is hard to compare with any other fishing and most anglers that have tried it described it being like nothing else they have ever tried before.
The Sauðaneslón or the lagoon that the river runs into also holds an abundance of arctic char in spring time that can be tricky to catch as well and finding what exactly they are feeding on can take a while but when you hit it all of a sudden, it is a blast!
The fishing in the upper river section is more classical with nymphs, streamers and sometimes dries. The river usually has gin clear water. It is very important to approach the river with caution as it is very easy to spook the fish in this small river.
In may when the first runs of arctic char start making their way up the river in a feeding frenzy the river suddenly offers a whole new experience and you can literally see tens of silver char sliding into a pool and you don’t know where to start. This happens at a different time each year as it depends on the temperature of the ocean and weather conditions rather than a certain date. The first runs usually have the bigger size char wich are extremely fun to fish for.
From the middle of September the char have ventured far into the highlands, signaling the start of the brown trout migration from the estuary up the river. These trout, adorned in vibrant golden skin and often marked with bright red spots, eagerly go after small streamers. Witness them aggressively pursuing your fly, resembling torpedoes in action.
