Iceland Fishing Guide

Strong start to the spring season

The First Days of the Season

March 31 – April 3

We kicked things off with our opening group, arriving on March 31. Fishing took place from April 1–3 across a variety of diverse and exciting locations: Laxá trout beats, Reykjadalsá, Geitafellsá, Eyvindarlækur and Mýrarkvísl.

Early Season Conditions

Much of Mýrarkvísl and the upper stretches of Reykjadalsá were still largely covered in snow during these first days, making parts of the rivers difficult or even impossible to fish. However, conditions are now improving, and these areas are gradually opening up.

First fish of the 2026 season hooked! slush fowing down the river made things tricky but we managed.

Strong Start at Syðra Fjall

Fish were caught in all locations, but Syðra Fjall beat on Laxá in Aðaldal stood out this time. For example, 20 fish were landed during a single session on just two rods.

On the very first session on April 1st, a stunning 76 cm trout was brought to hand — raising the question: are there sea run browns in Laxá in Aðaldal?

Classic Spring Weather

We experienced every kind of weather imaginable — just the way we like it for spring fishing:

  • Sunshine and calm conditions
  • Windy, overcast, but mild
  • Still air with light frost, snowfall, and intermittent sunshine

Múlatorfa beat on Laxá opened for the first time on April 1, and it was a great experience to fish it at this time of year.

Fishing was productive in deeper, slower-moving water, which made sense given that morning water temperatures were as low as 0.8°C.

Warming Waters, Rising Expectations

Since then, temperatures have risen, with water temperatures now reaching 3–4°C in the afternoons.

Warmer weather is in the forecast, and it’s well known that when rivers begin to warm up in spring, fishing activity can increase significantly.

A Fantastic Opening at Litlaá

Litlaá opened strongly, with the opening group landing around 250 fish, averaging about 59 cm — an excellent start to the season.

We also heard that in the most recent group, several beginners were trying fly fishing for the very first time — All of them caught their first fish on a fly, each of those fish were over 24 inches/60cm.

A Dream Catch in Brunná

In recent days, some truly impressive fish have been caught. Among them was a magnificent 84 cm sea trout from Brunná — a dream fish and a memory that will last a lifetime.
